An overview of the Department of Control and Automation Engineering

The Department of Control and Automation Engineering was established in the academic year 2019-2020. Its primary goal is to meet the demand for technicians in control and automation engineering, especially in the southern region of the country. The program duration is four years, after which graduates are awarded a university degree in Control and Automation Engineering.

The department was founded in response to the significant advancements in Iraq’s adoption of advanced technologies, particularly in the use of automatic control methods and computers in industry. The department focuses on the study of controlling engineering systems of various types, including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and environmental systems, among others. The aim is to control these systems in order to improve their accuracy and performance by using suitable automatic control devices. It also covers the study of computer components and control devices used in light and heavy industrial operations for the same purpose.

There are many government-owned industrial facilities in Basra, such as Basra Gas Company, Basra Oil Company, and foreign companies operating in Iraq. These institutions have introduced and widely implemented new control technologies, such as distributed control systems. Therefore, it was essential to prepare specialized staff to sustain these institutions and increase production.
